Job Background

The  Classroom Climate and Equity & Inclusion – Graduate Student Facilitator (CCEI-GSF) will support a project to build graduate student and Teaching Assistant (TA) capacity to peer-facilitate Classroom Climate and EDI TA Training workshops. This project is a partnership between the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology (CTLT) Indigenous Initiatives (II) and the Equity & Inclusion Office (EIO). CCEI-GSF will develop and deliver TA Training to support learning on Indigenous topics and to support equity and inclusion issues in the classroom. CCEI-GSFs will be trained in existing classroom climate and EDI workshop materials and approaches and have the opportunity to draw from their own knowledge to contribute to the development of additional materials and approaches for TA Training in these areas. This role will be situated in the CTLT II Team and but work collaboratively with the EIO. Indigenous Initiatives at CTLT develops and offers programming, resources, and consultations focused on Indigenous engagement in curriculum, pedagogy, classroom climate, and professional development.  Our work with campus and classroom climate supports the development of skills, resources, and capacity around Indigenous engagement in teaching and learning. We offer training to teaching assistants on topics such as discussing Indigenous and other socially contentious issues in the classroom, classroom climate, and  where our teaching and learning takes place.  The EIO provides  a diverse range of services that supports Human Rights and Conflict Engagement; Institutional Initiatives, including the Inclusion Action Plan; and Education and Engagement to build a more inclusive, welcoming, respectful UBC campus.

This position will work independently under the direction of Educational Consultant, Classroom and Campus Climate; Indigenous Initiatives. This role may work with other CCEI-GSFs hired within the project and may provide peer-review of colleagues’ work. Projects and related work may be undertaken, under the direction of other project team members.

Work Performed

The CCEI-GSF will be a core team member on the “Building Capacity through Peer-Facilitated Classroom Climate and Equity & Inclusion TA Training” project. The CCEI-GSF is responsible for developing and delivering workshops and curriculum for both TA training sessions for specific UBC departments and units that request training, open-registration TA and Graduate Student sessions, and “Train-the-Trainer” sessions as the team of CCEI-GSFs grows. More specifically, the CCEI-GSF’s responsibilities include program planning, development and delivery, curriculum planning and facilitation, program evaluation, and managing requests. This work includes:

  • Plans, designs, and facilitates Classroom Climate and Equity and Inclusion TA Training
  • Liaises with CTLT Events Team members to ensure all aspects of workshop administration and logistics meet requirements
  • Prepares facilitation materials including, developing, and/or adapting materials, lesson outlines and activities
  • Develops project timelines and coordinates progress tracking and reporting for Indigenous Initiatives Team to ensure the correct resources are allocated for the different engagements
  • Develops and implements systems and coordinates requests for TA education and organizes the timing and availability of both CCEI-GSFs and II Staff co-facilitation
  • Plans and attends planning meetings, uses judgement and analytical skills to gather information from meetings regarding next steps. Prepares and follows-up on meeting action items
  • Program planning, development and delivery, curriculum planning and creation, and program evaluation.
  • Coordinates and aligns programming with the Classroom Climate TA programming with other TA programming, especially from CTLT and Equity & Inclusion Office events as appropriate.
  • Contributes to funder reports, newsletters and other publications. Identifies and provides suggestions regarding potential program improvements.
  • Develops an annual program schedule and ensures that there are no conflicts with other TA education with CTLT and EIO. Communicates with external stakeholders, Department Heads, Departmental TA Coordinators, and leadership members in the Provost Office.

Qualifications

  • Enrolled in a UBC graduate program, preferably in a field related to Indigenous Studies, Education, Communications, Gender, Race and Social Justice
  • Knowledge about settler-colonialism in Canada, as well as First Nations and Indigenous histories, politics, cultural studies, law, social issues, and/or education is required
  • Familiarity with historical and contemporary Indigenous issues, particularly as they relate to post-secondary education
  • Demonstrated education, experience and/or work background related to equity, diversity, decolonization, and/or inclusion policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Ability to identify and explain patterns of inequity in outcomes and how those connect to systemic barriers for underrepresented and marginalized groups.
  • Experience working as a Teaching Assistant or familiarity with the role of TAs
  • Experience facilitating group discussions and group processes
  • Program planning and coordination experience and skills, including setting of goals and priorities.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to lead others and to function as an effective team member
  • Proficient with computer software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook, or equivalent
  • Demonstrated ability to liaise with multiple stakeholders and project partners (students, staff, faculty, alumni, community members, etc.)
  • Ability to prioritize, work, and problem solve independently and under pressure
  • Understandings of professional practices within higher education, such as using professional judgement in communicating with university units, departments, and faculty, staff and students. The position also requires skill and familiarity working and interacting in supportive ways with IBPOC and underrepresented faculty, staff, students, and community members.
