CTLT Indigenous Initiatives Welcomes New Staff, Samantha Nock!

CTLT Indigenous Initiatives is pleased to welcome Samantha Nock to the team!

Sam is joining us in the role of Educational Resources Developer. She will be working with the team to share and create engaging resources with the UBC learning community.

We asked Sam a few questions to get to know her better.

Three Fun Facts

  1. I love pop culture. I have a near encyclopedia like knowledge of celebrity gossip from 2005 – present.
  2. I have an active writing career outside of work. I have a to-be-soon-published manuscript coming out in the near future, and plenty of other projects on the go.

  3.  My not-so-secret and not-so-guilty guilty pleasure is Gilmore Girls. I can quote episodes word for word.

What are some of the things you have started working on in your new role? And what are some of the areas you are looking forward to exploring?

So far, I have been working to familiarize myself with the suite of projects I will be working on, such as What I Learned in Class Today. When I was an undergraduate at UBC in First Nations and Indigenous Studies, this was a pivotal resource for us. It feels full circle to now be supporting this project’s growth as an alumna and a staff.

I’ve been learning, hands on, how to produce our monthly newsletter (which you should register for if you haven’t already). It has been great to get to know the team, what we offer, and how we fit into the broader UBC community, by working on our communications. I am looking forward to the ways in which we can expand our newsletter and grow our online community.

There is so much that I am looking forward to explore in this role, but mostly I’m looking forward to the potential to create new and exciting learning resources. I think there are so many amazing things we can create for the learning community at UBC. I am passionate about Indigenous sovereignty in virtual spaces, and the ways in which our communities can innovate the world of new media. As an apihtaw’kos’an person, I am excited to see how we can dream our future.

What excited you about joining this team/working on this project?

I have a broad and strange skillset that includes communications, web development, community and arts education, working with youth, and facilitation. In my new role as Educational Resources Developer, I’m excited to explore how all of these skills come together to support the Indigenous Initiatives Team. The team is made up of amazing people who I feel immensely grateful to be working beside and learning from. To be honest, I’m really excited to create some really cool things.
