Indigenous Graduate Summer Institute

The Indigenous Graduate Summer Institute brings together newly admitted and current Indigenous graduate students in a safe, inclusive and immersive one-week introduction to graduate studies, research and student success strategies.
Whether you are joining an Indigenous cohort, or leading the way for Indigenous scholars in your field, we invite you to share and learn about the vibrant Indigenous community here at UBC. Throughout the week, participants will be joined by Elders, Indigenous scholars, community leaders and special guests.

- Interactive and hands-on science lab experience and research development dialogue session
- Interactive presentation with the Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre Mental Health, Wellbeing, Land-Based and Cultural activities
- Visits to the Museum of Anthropology, the UBC Farm and the Medicine Collective, and Pacific Spirit Park

- Strengthening relationships between student and supervisors

- Academic vs. non-academic career pathways
- Challenges and opportunities experienced by Indigenous peoples in academia

Cost
- There is no application or registration fee to attend the Summer Institute.
- On campus accommodation and meals are included for registrants, free of charge
Note: Costs of travel to and from the Summer Institute are the responsibility of participants.
Accommodation
- Participants will stay at Orchard Commons, one of UBC’s newest residences, and includes a private room with a single bed.
- Each room has basic furnishings with a semi-private washroom accessed by two same-gendered residents.
- Rooms include access to high-speed wireless internet, bed, desk, wardrobe, bookshelf, and closet.
- Multi-level lounges offer seating, TV, fridge, sink, and microwave.
Health and Safety
The Indigenous Graduate Summer Institute will be held in person - in line with public health restrictions as well as in accordance with UBC policies
- Selected info sessions/workshops may be made available online for students who are unable to attend the institute in person
- The health, safety and wellbeing of our students, faculty and staff remain our first priority. Depending on public health guidelines the Summer Institute may be held virtually, and participants will be notified as early as possible.
