CTLT Indigenous Initiatives is pleased to welcome Kyle Shaughnessy. Kyle will be taking on the role as an Educational Consultant, Staff Training, providing consultation and support for staff, students, and faculty seeking to foster greater inclusion and representation of Indigenous voices and perspectives in university curriculum and engagement strategies.
We asked Kyle to share a few fun facts about himself.

- I was born in and did my early growing up in the NWT, and have lived in several high arctic settlements.
- I am a huge enthusiast of 90s music and have seen Nirvana in concert.
What are some of the things you have started working on in your new role? And what are some of the areas you are looking forward to exploring?
So far I’ve mostly been engaged in the onboarding process and administrative aspects of things. But, I’ve also had the chance to attend quite a few online meetings, given the current work-from-home climate so many of us are now in. It’s been such an interesting way to get to know my new co-workers and leadership teams, and so much more fun and engaging than I imagined- lots of big laughs and opportunities for in-depth exploration of the meaningful work we’ll be working together. I can already tell that this is the right place for me and can’t wait to get going.
I am really excited to get cracking on a new workshop to support faculty and staff with territory acknowledgements. Doing territory acknowledgements can be a real source of anxiety for a lot of folks who may struggle to find the right words or approach, but with guidance, support, and encouragement, we can work together to ensure that they are delivered with meaning, heart, and intention.
What excited you about joining this team/working on this project?
As a social worker, I am highly passionate about systems change work that prioritizes human connection, personal and collective empowerment, and innovative teaching methods. After seeing What I Learned in Class Today, I knew that doing this work with CTLT would offer me a chance to thrive and be challenged in the best ways.
